CARICOM calls for enhanced protection of indigenous peoples

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is advocating for stronger policies to protect the rights of indigenous peoples and increase social and economic development opportunities throughout the region. Marking the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, CARICOM Secretary General Dr. Carla Barnett emphasized that indigenous communities are integral to the Caribbean's history, culture, and identity.

Dr. Barnett noted that indigenous knowledge regarding environmental stewardship, agriculture, medicine, and community governance is increasingly vital as the region faces climate change and biodiversity loss. The grouping highlighted that indigenous communities are disproportionately impacted by these environmental challenges.

As part of its recently relaunched Ten-Point Plan for Reparatory Justice, CARICOM has called for an Indigenous Peoples Development Programme. The initiative aims to help these communities thrive through meaningful dialogue and policies that respect their dignity and aspirations. This year's United Nations theme, “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being,” was also highlighted to recognize the role of traditional knowledge holders.
