CARICOM Leaders Offer Mediation Between US and Cuba

At the close of the 51st CARICOM heads of government meeting in Castries, Saint Lucia, leaders said the bloc would act as a neutral mediator between the United States and Cuba. Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad‑Bissessar announced CARICOM’s offer to facilitate dialogue amid an intensifying humanitarian crisis on the island, which has been hit by more than 240 U.S. sanctions since January 2026, cutting energy imports by up to 90 % and causing daily power outages of 22‑25 hours.

The proposal follows a UN General Assembly vote that approved an urgent debate on the U.S. embargo with 136 votes in favour. At the same summit, Persad‑Bissessar reiterated Trinidad and Tobago’s “unwavering” support for CARICOM, saying recent discussions had resolved earlier concerns about the bloc’s operations. The Caribbean community hopes the mediation effort will ease the crisis and restore regional stability.
