CARICOM observers recommend electoral reforms in the Bahamas

The CARICOM Election Observation Mission has released a report following the May 12 general election in the Bahamas, recommending significant electoral reforms to ensure transparency and integrity. Key recommendations include the establishment of an independent Parliamentary Registration Department (PRD) with legal safeguards against political influence, and reinforcing the independence of the Constituencies Commission.

The mission also called for comprehensive campaign finance reform. Proposed measures include legislation requiring the disclosure of funding sources, the implementation of spending limits, and the creation of penalties to deter vote buying or the misuse of state resources. The report noted concerns regarding the accuracy of the voter registry and highlighted instances of xenophobic rhetoric toward the Haitian community that may have impacted voter confidence.

Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper expressed support for campaign finance reform and the modernization of the PRD, noting that efforts to address the integrity of the voter register are a work in progress. While the report identified areas for improvement, including a voter turnout of 66.4%, it determined that the overall election process was peaceful and transparent.
