CARICOM official calls for expanded Caribbean statistics ecosystem
CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General Dr. Armstrong Alexis has called for the expansion of the statistics ecosystem in the Caribbean to better integrate data into regional policy and practice. Speaking at the opening of the 51st meeting of the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians (SCCS) in Anguilla, Alexis emphasized the need for robust, reliable, and comparable statistical evidence.
He noted that such data is critical for informing development planning and strengthening the case for development financing to address the unique vulnerabilities of Small Island Developing States. The week-long meetings, held under the theme ‘Harmonising Data, Strengthening Resilience’, also include the 38th Meeting of the Regional Census Coordinating Committee and the 16th CARICOM Regional Statistical Research Seminar. Participants aim to review the Regional Statistical Work Programme, prepare for the 2030 Census Round, and explore opportunities for technical and South-South cooperation.
