Carinola prison inmate escapes after work assignment

Francesco Ahmetovic, a 22-year-old inmate at the Carinola prison in the province of Caserta, escaped after failing to return from a work assignment. Ahmetovic had been authorized to work at a local agricultural colony on Tuesday, October 13, but did not return to the facility at the end of the day.

Law enforcement and prison police have launched searches throughout the Caserta territory to locate him. Ahmetovic, originally from Maddaloni, was arrested in February 2024 on charges of joint robbery and attempted murder, with his sentence originally scheduled to end in May 2029.

The incident has prompted criticism from the Union of Prison Police Syndicates (USPP). Representatives Giuseppe Moretti and Ciro Auricchio highlighted operational difficulties at the Carinola facility, claiming a long-standing shortage of approximately 40 agents and calling for increased staffing to ensure security and adequate working conditions.
