Carinthia faces projected shortage of 36,000 workers by 2050
The Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS) has warned that the Carinthia region could face a shortage of approximately 36,000 workers by 2050. This projected deficit is driven by demographic shifts, including declining birth rates and an aging population, which reduce the number of people available for the labor market.
Peter Wedenig, head of AMS Carinthia, noted that the issue involves both a shortage in the total number of workers and a lack of specific professional qualifications. To address this, AMS is collaborating with the Austrian Industrial Association and Diakonie de La Tour to better utilize existing labor potential.
Data from 2016 to 2025 shows a significant shift in the regional market: unemployment decreased by roughly 30 percent (about 7,500 people), while employment rose by 6.5 percent (approximately 13,000 people). During this same period, the number of open job positions more than doubled.
Efforts to mitigate future shortages include increasing the labor market participation of migrants and refugees. Diakonie de La Tour has been conducting support projects for this group for a decade, with its Migrants Care project reporting an 87 percent success rate in preparing participants for roles in the care sector.
