Carinthia marks 106 years since 1920 referendum
Carinthia is commemorating the 106th anniversary of the October 10, 1920, referendum, during which the majority of the population in the southern voting area decided to remain part of Austria. Official ceremonies were held in Klagenfurt, including a memorial service at the Anna Bischl cemetery and a formal event at the Landhausshof.
Amid the celebrations, a controversy has emerged in Klagenfurt regarding the display of the Carinthian flag. A resident was reportedly ordered by her property management to remove a flag from her balcony, citing that it obstructed the view of neighbors and negatively impacted the building's appearance. The incident has drawn criticism from local politics, with Vice Mayor Patrick Jonke describing the restriction as “sheer madness” given the significance of the anniversary.
