Carinthia offers diverse cycling routes in Austria

Carinthia, Austria’s southernmost state, offers a diverse landscape for cycling holidays that balances mountain climbing with flatter routes. The region’s lakes, valleys, and long-distance paths allow for varied difficulty levels within a single trip, making it suitable for both intense road riding and gentle leisure cycling.

Klagenfurt and Villach serve as primary bases for cyclists. Klagenfurt provides easy access to Wörthersee and flatter leisure routes, while Villach offers more flexibility, including access to Faaker See, Ossiacher See, the Drau river, the Alpe-Adria route, and mountain biking options.

The Carinthian Lake Loop is a notable 400km route that connects 10 different lakes in the region. While often completed over eight days, the loop can be used for shorter segments. The presence of lakes like Wörthersee, Ossiacher See, and Faaker See creates natural low-level corridors that contrast with the surrounding hills.
