Carla Bruni discusses personal history and sobriety

Carla Bruni has shared personal reflections regarding her past attractions and her journey toward sobriety. During an Instagram exchange with Carla Ghebali, the former French First Lady addressed her sexual orientation, stating, “I find women very attractive, but I am not homosexual.” She clarified that while she has experienced attraction to women, she has always been in love with men and identifies as heterosexual.

Additionally, Bruni spoke about her past struggles with alcohol and tobacco addiction, describing them as a way to “anesthetize certain emotions, certain pains, and to keep standing.” She noted that addiction can appear as a pleasure but possesses a “morbid” quality.

To maintain sobriety, Bruni has adopted principles similar to the 12-step program used by Alcoholics Anonymous, though she has not participated in the program directly. Her commitment to abstinence was also motivated by a personal challenge from her daughter, Giulia, who asked her to go one year without drinking.
