Venice Film Festival 2026 reveals competition slate and Italian entries

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival will run from 2 to 12 September 2026 on the Lido. The opening film is Danny Boyle’s biopic “Ink”, which also enters the main competition for the Golden Lion, while the closing, out‑of‑competition film is Giovanni Veronesi’s “Dio Ride”. Twenty titles compete for the top prize, including works by Werner Herzog, Hirokazu Kore‑eda, Martin McDonagh, Lee Chang‑dong, Casey Affleck and Ali Asgari. Italian cinema is strongly represented with five films in the official competition: Nanni Moretti’s “Succederà questa notte”, Marco Bechis’s “Ritorno a Buenos Aires”, Edoardo De Angelis’s “Il fuoco che ti porti dentro”, Andrea Pallaoro’s “The Echo Chamber” and Paolo Strippoli’s “L’Estranea”. The festival also features the only TV series in competition, “Peccato”, a mock‑documentary starring Emanuela Fanelli, and a documentary on Oasis. The international jury is chaired by actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. A parallel “Week of Criticism” spotlights emerging female directors.
