Carla Madeira releases fourth novel ‘Quando’

Brazilian author Carla Madeira has released her fourth novel, titled ‘Quando’ (published by Editora Record). The book follows the story of Viridiana, a mother in 1980s Brazil who makes the extreme decision to report her own son to the police following a tragic event. The narrative explores themes of motherhood, homophobia, guilt, violence, justice, and forgiveness as the family faces the consequences of this choice two decades later.

Madeira, who is considered one of Brazil’s most widely read contemporary fiction writers with over 1.3 million copies of her previous works sold, discussed her creative process and the evolution of her writing style. A launch event for the novel is scheduled for September 1, 2026, at the Tribunal de Contas do Estado de Minas Gerais (TCE-MG) as part of the ‘Sempre um Papo – 40 anos’ celebrations.
