Carla Zambelli stays in Italy as extradition case proceeds

Former Brazilian federal deputy Carla Zambelli remains free in Italy while awaiting a second hearing before the Court of Appeal in Rome on her extradition to Brazil. The case concerns two separate convictions: one for a cyber‑attack on Brazil’s National Council of Justice (CNJ) and another for illegal firearm possession.

Zambelli posted a video asserting that her residence is known to Italian authorities, that she is not a fugitive, and that she faces political persecution tied to Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes. The Italian judiciary has not yet scheduled the next hearing. It reaffirmed that the first case raised questions about Moraes’ impartiality, while the second case was reopened pending guarantees of medical care.

If extradited, Zambelli would be taken into custody in Brazil, possibly to serve her sentence at the Federal Penitentiary for Women in the Federal District (Colmeia). The outcome of the upcoming Italian proceedings will determine whether the extradition is carried out.
