Carles Puigdemont legal status shifts as arrest warrants are suspended

The legal landscape for Catalan independence leaders has shifted following a Spanish Constitutional Court ruling on the amnesty law. Judge Pablo Llarena has suspended arrest warrants for Carles Puigdemont, Toni Comín, and Lluís Puig, potentially allowing Puigdemont to return to Spain without immediate detention. However, the political party Vox has filed an appeal to the Supreme Court to reinstate these warrants.

Toni Comín, an elected MEP, indicated an urgency to return to Catalonia to begin his duties in the European Parliament, noting that the amnesty law provides a path to return without risk. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Carles Puigdemont intends to establish his residence in a Generalitat-owned duplex in Barcelona's high-end Sarriá-San Gervasio district.

In separate regional political developments, Xavier Garcia Albiol, the Mayor of Badalona, has denied rumors that he will lead the People's Party (PP) list for Barcelona in upcoming elections, stating his priority remains his municipal government. Additionally, Daniel Sirera of the PP has criticized the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat for their plan to purchase an occupied building in the Sant Andreu district.
