Carlinhos Bezerra sentenced to 36 years for femicide and homicide in Cuiabá

Carlos Alberto Gomes Bezerra, known as Carlinhos Bezerza, the son of former Mato Grosso governor Carlos Bezerra, was sentenced by a jury to 36 years in prison for the femicide of his ex‑partner Thays Machado and the qualified homicide of her boyfriend Willian César Moreno. The crimes took place in January 2023 in the Consil neighbourhood of Cuiabá and were described by the prosecution as premeditated acts motivated by the victim’s decision to end the relationship.

The trial was held on 31 [month] at the Forum of Cuiabá, presided over by Judge Mônica Catarina Perri Siqueira. During the hearing, Bezerra expressed remorse, saying the guilt “corroes” him daily and that he “lost control” at the moment of the shootings. The defence’s attempts to postpone the proceeding were rejected. The Mato Grosso Public Prosecutor’s Office, led by Vinícius Gahyva, indicated it will consider an appeal to increase the sentence, noting the crimes occurred before a recent legislative change that raised minimum penalties for femicide.
