Carlo Acutis: 1.2 million pilgrims visit tomb in Assisi

Hundreds of faithful gathered in Assisi to celebrate the first anniversary of the canonization of Carlo Acutis. The commemorative Mass was held at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore-Santuario della Spogliazione, where the young saint's tomb is located.

Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, Archbishop Emeritus of Perugia-Città della Pieve, presided over the service. During his homily, Bassetti described Acutis's brief life as ‘an hymn of praise’ and a sign of hope for younger generations to remain open to faith. He noted that Acutis serves as a model for modern youth through his use of technology and his commitment to prayer.

Data released during the anniversary indicates a significant surge in religious tourism; approximately 1.2 million pilgrims visited the tomb of Carlo Acutis between September 7, 2025, and September 7, 2026. The event was also attended by Andrea Acutis, the father of the saint.
