Brazil coach Ancelotti confirms Neymar's retirement from national team

Brazil national team head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar will not return to international football, marking the end of the forward's long tenure with the Seleção. Ancelotti stated that Neymar personally communicated his decision to retire from the national team following the 2026 World Cup.

Ancelotti praised Neymar as an ‘extraordinary and unique talent’ who is ‘irreplaceable,’ noting that while the player deserved to participate in the recent World Cup due to his quality, the team must now move forward. The coach emphasized that the era of the generation that began in 2018 has concluded.

In response, Ancelotti is initiating a major squad rebuild focused on youth development. The strategy involves prioritizing players born between 2004 and 2008 to prepare for future competitions, including the Copa América and the 2030 World Cup. Recent call-ups have already reflected this shift, featuring several debutants and a significantly lower average age compared to the 2026 World Cup squad.
