Carlo Calabrò presents noir novel Sangue e cemento in Palermo
Author Carlo Calabrò presented his new noir novel, ‘Sangue e cemento’ (Blood and Cement), at the Modus Vivendi bookstore in Palermo. The story connects the cities of Palermo and São Paulo, following a journalist named Everton who navigates the social dynamics of the Brazilian megalopolis while searching for his own identity.
Calabrò emphasized that a noir novel should possess a ‘political soul’ to reflect societal issues and encourage readers to think about building a better world by examining the difficult and corrupt aspects of reality.
During the presentation, Fabrizio Ferrandelli, Palermo’s assessor for digital innovation and social housing, noted the parallels between the book’s themes and local issues. He highlighted how the novel serves as a metaphor for global struggles regarding housing, noting that the speculation and crime depicted in the book—spanning São Paulo, the Amazon, and Palermo—reflect real-world challenges regarding the right to shelter and the fight against organized crime in public housing.
