Carlo Comporti appointed as chair of ESMA

The Council of the European Union has formally appointed Carlo Comporti as the new chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). Comporti, a current commissioner at the Italian Companies and Stock Exchange Commission (CONSOB), will begin a five-year term on 1 November 2026. His term is eligible for one extension.

Comporti’s appointment follows a shortlist provided by ESMA’s board of supervisors, provisional agreement by EU ambassadors in July 2026, and endorsement by the European Parliament on 15 September. Comporti currently serves on ESMA’s board of supervisors and management board.

In conjunction with this leadership change, Carlos San Basilio from Spain’s National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) has been appointed to occupy Comporti’s former seat on the Council. This appointment ensures Spanish representation within the regulator’s leadership alongside other member states.
