Carlo D'Amato, former mayor of Naples, passes away

Carlo D’Amato, a veteran of Campania politics and former deputy of the Italian Socialist Party, died after a long illness. Born in Maiori on the Amalfi Coast, he served as mayor of Naples from 1984 to 1986, overseeing the city’s post‑earthquake reconstruction and championing the completion of the municipal metro line. D’Amato is credited with introducing a “political responsibility” formula for centre‑left coalition governments. His political career waned during the Tangentopoli scandals of the early 1990s.

His daughter Carlotta recalled his personal strength during his illness, while regional leaders such as former mayor and governor Antonio Bassolino, PSI secretary Enzo Maraio, and Campania council president Massimiliano Manfredi issued statements of condolence, describing him as a great socialist mayor who contributed to Naples’ growth.
