Carlo Verdone calls for new talent to revitalize Italian cinema

Director Carlo Verdone has emphasized the urgent need for generational renewal within the Italian film industry. Speaking during the announcement of the finalists for the 17th Mario Verdone Prize, Verdone highlighted that the future of the seventh art depends on young talent to revitalize a sector currently facing challenges in both screenwriting and cinema attendance.

The Mario Verdone Prize, dedicated to the memory of the late film critic and scholar, will be presented during the European Film Festival in Lecce from November 7 to 14. The finalists for the debut works category include Davide Angiuli, Gabriele Berti, Giovanni Nasta, Diego Tricarico, Mara Fondacaro, Alberto Palmiero, and Tommaso Renzoni.

Verdone noted that while many past winners have successfully advanced their careers, the current climate is difficult. He pointed to a decline in cinema attendance and expressed concern over the complexity of modern human relations and the difficulty authors face when trying to find meaningful stories amidst a landscape of negative news.
