Carlos Alvarado Quesada, the former president of Costa Rica, has been elected as the new Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum–V20 (CVF-V20). The announcement was made during the organization's fourth leaders' meeting held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Alvarado is scheduled to assume his new role in January 2027, succeeding Mohamed Nasheed, the former president of the Maldives. The CVF-V20 is an international platform comprising 77 member countries across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Pacific that are highly susceptible to the impacts of climate change.

In his capacity as Secretary General, Alvarado stated his intention to focus on mobilizing resources and providing accessible, affordable, and reliable solutions for member nations. The organization works on critical issues including climate finance, economic resilience, energy transition, and addressing loss and damage caused by environmental shifts.
