Carlos Alvear registers as PSC candidate for Samborondón mayor

Carlos Alvear Vivanco has officially registered his candidacy for the Mayor of Samborondón representing the Social Christian Party (PSC) for the November 2026 sectional elections. An orthodontist by profession, Alvear previously served as a council member for La Puntilla and as vice-mayor between 2019 and 2023 under the administration of Juan José Yúnez.

His candidacy marks a significant political shift in the canton, as it is the first time in nearly three decades that the PSC ticket will not be led by a member of the Yúnez family, who have held political hegemony in the region since 1996. Alvear enters the race following the voluntary withdrawal of María Belén Yúnez, who declined her pre-candidacy in July to take a “pause” in her political project.

Alvear will face Niels Olsen, representing the ADN party, in the upcoming election. Alongside the mayoral candidate, the PSC has also registered several candidates for urban and rural council positions.
