Carlos Barahona released under precautionary measures amid extortion probe

Carlos Barahona, a professional footballer for Club Sport Cartaginés, has been released under precautionary measures following a judicial hearing in Heredia. The decision comes amid an ongoing investigation into illegal 'gota a gota' loans and extortion.

The Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) alleges that Barahona acted as an intermediary, connecting a victim with a suspect named Duarte to facilitate a large loan. Authorities further claim Barahona participated in intimidating and violent actions to ensure debt repayment.

During recent raids, investigators seized weapons, vehicles, money, drugs, and ammunition. While the prosecution sought preventive detention for Barahona and three other suspects—including two relatives—the court ruled that Barahona could remain free while the legal process continues. His defense maintains that he is only facing extortion charges and should be allowed to continue his professional football career.
