Carlos Barrera’s Return Fuels Student Protest Over UAEMéx Tuition Discount
Former rector Carlos Eduardo Barrera Díaz has been reinstated as a full‑time professor in the Faculty of Chemistry at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMéx) for the 2026‑B semester. His appointment has sparked outrage among students who recall his tenure marked by accusations of corruption and a six‑month institutional strike, viewing the move as a disregard for past scandals.
The student organization Enjambre Estudiantil Unificado also condemned the university’s decision to withdraw a 12 % discount on re‑enrollment fees for the same semester, labeling it a rollback of free education caused by a lack of political will rather than budget constraints. The group highlighted that, while additional scholarships were offered, they are insufficient and noted that the administration granted paid leave to Barrera despite the controversy.
