FIFA adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigns over World Cup stake sale FAST-MOVING

Senior FIFA adviser Carlos Cordeiro quit his post on 31 July 2026, saying he could not watch FIFA consider selling a permanent stake in the World Cup. He stated he had no involvement in the proposal and called it “a bad deal for FIFA’s member associations, a bad deal for football and a bad deal for the sport’s long‑term future.”

FIFA’s plan, called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), would create a $20 billion commercial subsidiary and offer up to 20 % of World Cup commercial rights to private investors, aiming to raise about US$4.2 billion. The organisation set a September 19 deadline for the 211 member associations to vote on the plan.

The proposal has been met with widespread opposition. UEFA’s 55 national federations voted unanimously to boycott all FIFA competitions while the plan is under consideration. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) have also publicly rejected the plan, with the AFC describing it as “totally unacceptable.” Over 130 member associations have voiced opposition, putting the proposal at risk of failing to reach the 106‑vote threshold needed for approval.
