Carlos Correa regains freedom as Venezuelan criminal case is closed

Human rights defender and director of the organization Espacio Público, Carlos Correa, has regained full freedom following the definitive closure of criminal proceedings against him. The judicial decision, requested by the Prosecutor's Office, formally annuls charges including terrorism financing, conspiracy, money laundering, and treason to the fatherland.

Correa had been under precautionary measures since January 16, 2025, following an arrest in central Caracas on January 7. His detention occurred during an operation that also affected Enrique Márquez and Rafael Tudares. Espacio Público stated that the defense of freedom of expression does not constitute a crime, while the National Union of Press Workers called for an end to the judicial pursuit of other journalists currently facing legal processes.
