Carlos Herencia wins Huamanga mayoralty after two previous attempts

Carlos Herencia Gallegos, representing the Libertad Popular party, has become the virtual mayor of the Huamanga province following the 2026 Regional and Municipal Elections. Herencia Gallegos secured 31.1% of the vote, leading candidates Richard Prado Ramos of Podemos Perú, who received 24.5%, and Yuri Oscorima Núñez of APP-Trabaja Ayacucho, who obtained 16.2%.

This victory marks Herencia Gallegos’s third attempt at an executive electoral position. His professional background includes decades of service as an engineer for the Regional Government of Ayacucho from 1984 to 2025. His official filings with the National Jury of Elections (Jurado Nacional de Elecciones) include references to past legal proceedings, including an acquittal in a case of aggravated collusion and a declaration of criminal responsibility in a case of incompatible negotiation.
