Carlos Horacio Salinas, Boca Juniors world champion, dies at 70

Argentine football is mourning the death of Carlos Horacio ‘Loco’ Salinas, who passed away at the age of 70. Born in the Ciudadela neighborhood of San Miguel de Tucumán, Salinas rose from humble beginnings to become a world champion.

Salinas is most notably remembered for his tenure with Boca Juniors, where he achieved international glory in 1978 by winning both the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Intercontinental. During the Intercontinental Cup against Borussia Mönchengladbach, he scored a decisive goal in a 3-0 victory.

His professional journey included stints at Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy, River Plate, Chacarita Juniors, and Argentinos Juniors. While at Argentinos Juniors, he famously scored the penalty that contributed to the relegation of San Lorenzo in 1981. His career was also marked by his involvement in the transition of the Boca Juniors squad during the arrival of Diego Maradona.
