Carlos Jacanamijoy: Artist inspired by Putumayo nature
Carlos Jacanamijoy, an artist from the Inga community, creates paintings inspired by the nature of the Sibundoy Valley in Putumayo and the surrounding Amazon rainforest. His work is characterized by vivid landscapes that use abstractions of color and light to represent the creation and transformation of the jungle.
Jacanamijoy studied fine arts at La Sabana University, the University of Nariño, and earned a Master’s in Plastic Arts from the National University of Colombia. His artistic style may relate to the ritual processes of the yagé plant, though his work is not considered a mere imitation of the natural environment.
His international career includes exhibitions at the Smithsonian in New York and Washington, Casa de América in Madrid, the Palace of the Workers in China, and the Palace of Nations in Geneva. In 2013, the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá hosted his first retrospective, titled ‘Magia, memoria y color’.
