Carlos Jornet elected President of the Inter-American Press Association
Carlos Jornet, journalistic director of La Voz del Interior, has been elected President of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) for the 2026-2027 term. His election took place in Bogotá, Colombia, during the closing of the organization's 82nd Annual Assembly.
In his inaugural speech, Jornet emphasized the necessity of defending journalism against intolerance and disinformation, stating, “Every time a media outlet goes out, the bonfire of intolerance and disinformation is fueled.” He also addressed the economic challenges posed by new technologies, specifically warning against the unauthorized use of journalistic content to train artificial intelligence models, which he noted affects copyright and the economic sustainability of media companies.
The assembly also addressed regional concerns regarding press freedom. Reports indicated that during the last semester, journalists were killed in Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala, Peru, and Haiti. Additionally, the IAPA highlighted ongoing challenges in Paraguay, including judicial pressures, digital harassment, and the emergence of disinformation networks using manipulated content and artificial intelligence to discredit critical voices.
