Carlos María Giménez, Argentine boxing legend, dies
Argentine boxing figure Carlos María Giménez has passed away. Born in Bahía Blanca in 1948, Giménez was a prominent figure in 20th-century pugilism, known for a career defined by both athletic success and personal perseverance.
During his professional career, Giménez competed in over 130 bouts, securing approximately 115 victories, including 59 by knockout. A major milestone occurred on May 17, 1972, when he became the Argentine champion after defeating Juan Aranda at the Luna Park stadium.
Giménez challenged for a world title on two occasions against Colombian boxer Antonio Cervantes, famously known as Kid Pambelé. His first attempt was in 1973, and his second occurred in 1977, a match noted for a controversial referee decision regarding a cut on his eyebrow.
His life story was marked by significant hardship; raised in extreme poverty, he worked as a shoe shiner and newspaper vendor, and at times experienced homelessness. He eventually found a path through the sport at the Salón de los Deportes.
