Carlos Marighella: 30 years since State admitted guilt in death

The Brazilian State's official recognition of its responsibility for the death of guerrilla leader and former federal deputy Carlos Marighella marks 30 years since the admission of guilt.

Marighella was killed in an ambush by dictatorship agents in São Paulo on November 4, 1969. Following his death, his son, Carlos Augusto, faced persecution due to his surname. Marighella was initially buried as an indigent, but his remains were transferred to his hometown of Salvador in 1979 after the passage of the Amnesty Law.

On September 11, 1996, under the terms of Law 9.140 (sanctioned in 1995), the State issued a death certificate acknowledging its role in the killing. This legislation established the Special Commission on Political Dead and Disappeared. For the family, this act served as a vital step in repairing Marighella's reputation and provided legal clarity that allowed families of disappeared victims to access assets.
