Carlos Martínez signs with Inter San Carlos amid Alajuelense refereeing dispute

Costa Rican right‑back Carlos Martínez, a former Alajuelense player who most recently played for Partizan Tirana in Albania, has been signed by Inter San Carlos. The club highlighted his experience, noting his previous stints with Alajuelense, Guadalupe, Herediano and his participation in the 2022 World Cup with the national team.

The Costa Rican Football Federation’s Arbitration Commission later acknowledged a clear error in a recent match involving Alajuelense, stating that referee William Mattus failed to award a penalty to Alajuelense’s striker Anthony Hernández. The commission said the VAR review used incorrect criteria and should have considered the defender’s dangerous foot‑to‑stomach contact, concluding the decision was mistakenly deemed accidental.
