Carlos Massoni, the legendary Brazilian basketball player known as ‘Mosquito’, has died at the age of 87. His passing was confirmed by the Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB), which described him as an ‘irreparable loss’ and a ‘hero of Brazilian basketball.’

Massoni was a central figure in one of the most successful eras of Brazilian basketball. His major achievements include winning the World Championship in 1963 in Rio de Janeiro, as well as earning two Olympic bronze medals at the 1960 Rome Games and the 1964 Tokyo Games. His international accolades also feature a silver medal at the 1970 World Championship, a bronze in 1967, and three Pan American Games medals: gold in 1971, silver in 1963, and bronze in 1959.

Born in São Paulo, Massoni began his career at Associação Atlética São Paulo before playing professionally for Palmeiras. He later had a significant ten-season tenure with Sírio and concluded his playing career with Portuguesa and São Caetano. Known for his skill as a playmaker and his ability to drive to the basket, he later transitioned into coaching and teaching after earning a degree in physical education.
