Carlos Mesía seeks consensus on Senate legislative powers report
Carlos Mesía Ramírez, president of the Senate Constitution Commission, has indicated that a consensus is possible regarding the modification of the report on legislative powers sent by the Chamber of Deputies. Mesía stated that discussions are underway with Renovación Popular and other parliamentary groups to refine the document without “denaturing” the original framework approved by the lower house.
Mesía noted that certain “formal flaws” were identified during the debate of the report. The proposed modifications aim to incorporate additional subject matters, specifically focusing on citizen security and the El Niño phenomenon. He mentioned that recent confrontations within the working group have actually helped bring different political stances closer together.
If the modified report is approved by the Constitution Commission in the coming days, it will proceed to the Senate Plenary for further discussion and voting. Mesía also addressed a recent incident involving Interior Minister César Astudillo and senators, stating the matter is resolved and the focus remains on the legislative debate.
