Carlos Rafael Medina identified in Tucumán mass grave
The Argentine Team of Forensic Anthropology (EAAF) has identified the remains of Carlos Rafael Medina, a 20-year-old student kidnapped during Argentina’s military dictatorship in 1976.
Medina was abducted from his home in the early hours of April 15, 1976, shortly after the March 24 military coup. His remains were recovered from the Pozo de Vargas, the country’s largest clandestine mass grave located in Tucumán province. The recovery was conducted by the Archaeology, Memory and Identity Collective of Tucumán (CAMIT).
Genetic identification was achieved using blood samples provided by Medina’s siblings, Silvia and Jorge. Federal Judge Guillermo Díaz Martínez notified the family of the identification during a recent hearing. The remains will be returned to the family for a memorial ceremony and final burial.
