Carlos Reutemann's 1981 championship loss revisited

The anniversary of the 1981 Caesars Palace Grand Prix in Las Vegas highlights the championship battle between Carlos Reutemann and Nelson Piquet. On October 17, 1981, Reutemann lost the Formula 1 World Championship by a single point to Piquet.

Engineer Sergio Rinland recently shared insights regarding Reutemann’s performance during that race, noting that a clutch failure forced the Argentine driver to reduce his pace to protect the gearbox. This mechanical issue contributed to Reutemann finishing eighth, while Piquet secured fifth place to claim the title.

While Piquet faced extreme physical exhaustion on the unusual anti-clockwise circuit, Reutemann’s loss remains a significant moment in Argentine motorsport history. The event also marked a period of internal tension at Williams, as teammate Alan Jones won the race amidst a strained relationship with Reutemann.
