Carlos Serrano elected leader of Izquierda Unida in Castilla y León
Carlos Serrano has been elected as the new regional coordinator for Izquierda Unida (IU) in Castilla y León, defeating the previous coordinator, Juan Gascón, in a primary election. Serrano is scheduled to take leadership of the party in the region starting October 17.
Serrano intends to shift the party's focus toward the rights of the working class and territorial defense, moving beyond a primary emphasis on ecosocialism, feminism, and diversity. He advocates for building alliances 'slowly' and 'from below,' targeting not only political parties like Podemos but also social movements, neighborhood associations, and unions.
Regarding the upcoming general elections on November 29, Serrano cautioned against rushing into coalitions, stating that 'making a coalition in a hurry and running is not the best way to move forward.' He expressed hope for solidarity with other political forces without demanding maximum concessions.
