Carlos Simón Poblete identified after 47 years of disappearance

The Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) has identified the remains of Carlos Simón Poblete, who was kidnapped and disappeared in April 1977 during Argentina's last civic-military dictatorship. Poblete, who was 33 years old at the time of his disappearance, was last seen in the province of Córdoba alongside his wife, María del Carmen Moyano.

Poblete's remains had been buried as unidentified (NN) in Section 33 of the Mendoza Municipal Cemetery. While the body was exhumed by the EAAF in 2010 as part of an archaeological investigation involving 250 graves, his identity remained unknown until this year. The identification was made possible after his daughter, Miriam Fernández, provided a new blood sample for genetic testing.

The forensic work in Section 33, conducted between 2010 and 2015, targeted areas used during the National Reorganization Process to bury unidentified individuals. With this successful identification, four disappeared persons have now been identified within the Mendoza Municipal Cemetery. The investigation involved collaboration with the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the National University of Cuyo and the Ecumenical Movement of Mendoza.
