Carlsberg Britvic proposes closing Marston’s Brewery in Burton

Carlsberg Britvic has announced proposals to close the Marston’s Brewery and its primary logistics operation in Burton upon Trent by summer 2027. The move puts approximately 310 jobs at risk at the historic Staffordshire site, which has been brewing beer for nearly 200 years.

The company cited a structural decline in the UK cask ale category, noting that volumes have more than halved in less than a decade, as a primary driver for the decision. CEO Paul Davies stated the move is intended to ensure the company’s portfolio is focused on areas of growing consumer demand.

While certain priority brands such as Hobgoblin, McEwan’s, and Brooklyn will remain in the company’s portfolio, Carlsberg Britvic is actively seeking new owners for other cask and regional ale brands. The brewery and logistics site are expected to continue operating during the transition period.
