Carlsberg India Alwar brewery ordered shut over emissions violations

The Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board has ordered the immediate closure of Carlsberg India’s Alwar brewery after discovering significant environmental violations. The regulator revoked the facility's consent to operate and directed local utilities to disconnect its power supply.

Investigations revealed that particulate emissions reached 633 mg/Nm³, nearly eight times the permitted limit of 80 mg/Nm³. Additionally, the brewery failed to meet mandatory data reporting requirements, uploading only 35.12% of required emissions-monitoring data to the Central Pollution Control Board’s online portal, far below the 85% threshold.

The shutdown follows a July 2026 inspection and subsequent recommendation for closure by central regulators. While the closure is expected to impact beer supplies within Rajasthan, industry officials suggest the immediate impact on sales may be limited as the peak summer season has passed.

This regulatory action occurs as Carlsberg India prepares for a potential $700 million initial public offering (IPO). The company recently received observations from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) regarding its confidential pre-filing.
