Carlsberg maps hop DNA to enable climate‑resilient brewing

Carlsberg Research Laboratory in Copenhagen has produced the most detailed genetic map of hops ever created, a study published in Nature Communications. The map pinpoints the genome regions that determine yield, aroma and resistance, giving scientists and growers the tools to breed hop varieties that can tolerate higher temperatures and prolonged drought.

The breakthrough was announced by Carlsberg’s Italian subsidiary ahead of World Beer Day on 7 August. Founded in 1875 by J.C. Jacobsen, Carlsberg has a long history of brewing‑science innovations, from the pH scale to yeast purification and barley genome sequencing. The new hop DNA map aims to safeguard future hop supplies, improve sustainability of cultivation and open possibilities for novel flavor profiles in beer.
