Carlsberg plans to close Marston’s Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent

Carlsberg Britvic has announced plans to close the historic Marston’s Brewery and its logistics operations in Burton-upon-Trent by summer 2027. The move is expected to affect approximately 310 employees.

The company cited a significant decline in the consumption of cask ale as the primary driver for the decision, noting that volumes in the United Kingdom have more than halved in less than a decade. While priority brands such as Hobgoblin, McEwan’s, and Brooklyn will remain in the company’s portfolio, their future production locations remain uncertain. Other smaller or regional brands may be sold to specialist owners.

This announcement follows the closure of the 150-year-old Banks’s Brewery in Wolverhampton two years ago. At that time, Carlsberg had intended to consolidate production in Burton to establish it as a national center for craft and traditional beer, a strategy that now appears to have been abandoned.
