Carmarthen undergoes £41m town centre transformation

A £41 million redevelopment project is currently underway to transform the former Debenhams store in Carmarthen into a multi-use facility named Atriwm. Managed by Carmarthenshire Council, the project aims to revitalize the town centre by converting the St Catherine’s Walk Shopping Centre building into a hub for leisure, health, education, and local government services.

Internal works are progressing, with soft play equipment, indoor adventure golf, a TAG Active arena, and an electric go-karting track already being installed. The facility will also feature a 24-hour gym with activity studios and various health treatment rooms, including dental facilities. For educational purposes, the site will include specialized health and social care training areas, such as a life-like hospital ward for trainee observation.

The Atriwm development will be occupied by the Hywel Dda University Health Board, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), and the local council. The council plans to relocate its customer service hub to the site and will operate the gym and children’s activity areas. Completion of the project is expected in early 2027.
