Carmarthenshire Council to demolish former Wilko building

Carmarthenshire County Council has confirmed plans to demolish the former Wilko building to facilitate town centre regeneration. While demolition was originally slated for October 2026, the timeline has shifted, with work now expected to begin early next year.

The decision follows condition surveys indicating that the building has reached the end of its usable life. Significant investment would be required to meet current standards, including an estimated £1 million for essential roof maintenance alone. The Council determined that demolition is the most cost-effective option and provides an opportunity to upgrade the existing car park.

The demolition will be fully funded by the Welsh Government through its Transforming Towns Programme, meaning the project will incur no cost to the Council. Officials are currently in commercial discussions with interested parties regarding the future use of the site, though no formal agreement has been reached.
