Carmarthenshire schools face potential closure due to deficits
Four schools in Carmarthenshire face potential closure due to declining pupil numbers and increasing budget deficits. The council has recommended the closure of Ysgol Blaenau, Ysgol Pontiets, Ysgol Carwe, and Ysgol Bancffosfelen.
Forecasted budget deficits for these institutions are expected to rise by the end of the 2026-27 period, with Ysgol Blaenau facing the highest projected deficit at £362,556. A report presented to the education scrutiny committee indicates that falling birth rates, rising building maintenance costs, and recruitment pressures are shifting the educational landscape in Wales.
As of January 2026, Carmarthenshire reported over 3,500 surplus primary pupil spaces across its 94 primary schools. The council noted that 22 schools in the county had 50 or fewer pupils earlier this year, up from 18 two years ago, impacting the financial viability of many local institutions.
