Carmen Pérez claims women's win and second overall at Badwater 135 ultramarathon

Spanish runner Carmen Pérez, 44, made her debut at the Badwater 135, the 217‑km ultramarathon through Death Valley to Mount Whitney, and won the women's division while finishing second overall with a time of 21 h 05 min 32 s, the fastest female time ever recorded and the second‑fastest overall in the race’s history.

She was only 11 min 51 s behind American Max Jolliffe, who set a new overall record of 20 h 53 min 41 s. Fellow Spanish runner Ivan Penalba, her partner, placed third among men and fourth overall, breaking the 22‑hour barrier. The performance was hailed as historic for ultrarunning.
