Carmen Thyssen Museum to occupy former Palau Marcet in Barcelona

The Sub‑Commission of Urbanism, which brings together the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Barcelona City Council, approved a comprehensive amendment to the Metropolitan General Plan and the special heritage plan for the Palau Marcet building. The changes permit the rehabilitation, expansion and conversion of the former cinema Comèdia, a protected late‑19th‑century structure, into the new Carmen Thyssen Museum. The building, classified as a local cultural interest asset, will be used exclusively for sociocultural purposes, with complementary activities allowed provided they respect the museum function and heritage values. Up to 1,700 m² (18 % of the total roof area) may be built above ground, while the entire underground parcel can be used for parking, technical installations and other compatible uses, subject to preservation of protected elements. Facades and original architectural features must be restored using historically accurate materials and techniques.

The planning amendment also reclassifies the site’s urban zoning to give it metropolitan equipment status, ensuring the future museum will serve as a high‑profile cultural venue in the city centre at the junction of Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via.
