Carnegie Mellon snake robots deployed in Venezuela quake rescue
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University sent snake‑like robots to Venezuela after a magnitude earthquake struck the northern part of the country on 24 June. The robots, equipped with forward‑facing cameras, were able to crawl into narrow, unstable spaces inside collapsed buildings to help search‑and‑rescue teams assess conditions.
The mission was conducted in the La Guaira region from 30 June to 3 July. Teams from the Venezuelan Red Cross, Colombian Red Cross, the Topos de México volunteer group and other international responders coordinated with the U.S. researchers. Although no survivors were located, the robots provided valuable information that allowed rescuers to rule out hidden victims and to reorganize their efforts. The deployment was initiated by Beatriz Gonzalez, a Venezuelan living in Atlanta, who connected the university team to the humanitarian need. Within 24 hours the researchers and the robots were ready in Miami and then flown to Venezuela.
