Carnival Cruise Line pilots hull‑cleaning robot on Carnival Pride

Carnival Cruise Line has partnered with marine‑coating specialist Jotun to test a new automated hull‑cleaning system called the HullSkater on its ship Carnival Pride. The remotely operated robot uses cameras and sensors to inspect the hull underwater and clean marine growth before it accumulates. By keeping the hull clear, the system can reduce the extra propulsion power that fouling adds – up to 25‑30% – which in turn lowers fuel consumption, emissions and the risk of transporting invasive species.

AVP of fuel performance and decarbonisation Jari Oinas said the technology allows a more proactive approach to hull maintenance and supports Carnival’s long‑term sustainability goals. Jotun’s regional vice‑president for the Americas, Stein Kjolberg, called the trial a demonstration of leadership for an “American icon”. Data collected from the pilot will be used to evaluate whether the HullSkater can be rolled out across the fleet to improve efficiency and environmental performance.
